Investor statement on  climate change

With its signing of a new global investor statement, the Danske Bank Group speaks in favour of combating global warming. The statement sends a clear message to the negotiations taking place during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP16) in Mexico from 29 November to 16 December 2010.

Global Initiative
In November 2010, the Danske Bank Group – including its subsidiary Danica Pension and the brand Danske Capital – signed the global investor statement, thus joining more than 250 of Photo of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa the world’s leading investors.

The message to governments throughout the world and their climate negotiators at the Climate Change Conference, at which a successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol is being considered, is thus clear: "Take action now in the fight against global warming or risk economic disruptions far more severe than the ones we have experienced so far."

A UNEP FI Initiative
The unmistakable call for action was initiated by UNEP FI – a partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme and the global financial sector. The statement is to signal the investors’ unequivocal call for politicians to create the optimum setting for investments in long-term climate solutions through legislation.

Statement issues for governments to addressStatement issues for governments to address

  • Short-, mid- and long-term greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
  • Energy and transportation policies to accelerate deployment of renewable energy, green buildings, clean vehicles, etc.
  • Strong price signals on carbon dioxide emissions and an efficient carbon credit trading market.
  • Fossil fuel phase-out.
  • Guidelines for disclosure of corporate environment-related risks.

Most Extensive Collective Investor Effort Ever Seen
The statement is the most extensive joint investor effort ever made – thus collectively representing asset capital worth more than USD 15 billion, corresponding to the total US GDP.

Group Support
The participation of the Danske Bank Group emphasises how we wish to run our business. Kristian Højland, Group CR Coordinator, says: "With our signature, we are stating loud and clear that we back the political targets, and we hope the negotiations will have an ambitious and positive outcome".

In 2009, the Danske Bank Group went carbon neutral, partly through its own energy reductions and partly through purchase of carbon credits.
